Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) has issued 10 principles that together represent a draft Internet Bill of Rights to inform broad U.S. data privacy laws. Among the recommended rights are greater transparency in data collection practices by Web firms, no unfair discrimination or exploitation, opt-in consent for data collection, deletion of personal data on request, and timely alerts to breaches from companies retaining personal information. Democratic and GOP officials imply that traction is building for such an edict after the defeat of similar congressional initiatives despite last year’s massive Equifax data breach and other scandals.
